What do you need when getting a puppy?

We have made a checklist of all the necessary equipment you will need for your new puppy

Congratulations on the decision about your new family member! You face an exciting time with your new four-legged friend, and we want to help you prepare for what you need when the puppy moves in. Here you will get a practical guide to the necessary equipment, so you can be ready to give your puppy the best start in life.

1. Dog sign

It is a legal requirement for all dogs to wear dog tags, and it is important to have this under control before you pick up your puppy. The dog tag must contain the owner's name, address and telephone number. This is essential to ensure that your puppy can get home quickly should it run away. It is also a good idea to have the dog sign done before you pick up the puppy, so you are ready from day one.

Among other things, you can have a nice dog tag made at one of our many dealers, which you can find here.

2. Leash, collar and harness

When you pick up your puppy, you must have a leash, collar and harness ready. The collar is important as it carries the dog tag and ensures that your contact information is always available.
We have a large selection of light and soft puppy collars, so your new dog can get used to walking with a collar.

A harness is especially good, as it distributes the pressure over several areas of the body and reduces the risk of neck injuries. We offer harnesses for puppies which are the best in tests, as they are super soft and do not irritate the soft puppy fur, and are light so the harness does not affect the dog on the walk.

The leash, or line, helps you keep control of your puppy during the many small trips to the toilet and play. For puppies, a leash is recommended rather than a flexline, as flexline requires the puppy to be trained to walk on a leash.

We have a selection of durable and soft puppy leashes, developed to be light for your first walks.

If you get a small puppy (max 9kg as an adult), we recommend our puppy leashes. If you get a large puppy from the start (max 40kg as an adult), we recommend that you choose our standard leashes.

3. Dog food

The right food is essential for your puppy's health and growth. Talk to the breeder about what food the puppy has been fed and consider a gradual transition to the food you have chosen. It is a good idea to have treats ready, both for the trip home and for training at home. Be sure to choose food that is adapted to your puppy's breed and size and follow the dosage instructions on the packaging.

Take your treats with you on the trip in our treat bag, which you can find here .

4. Bowls for water and food

Your puppy must have access to fresh water and adequate meals. Choose bowls in a size that suits your puppy's needs and consider bowls that are easy to clean. Some families choose to leave the food out all day, while others prefer to dose the meals. Find out what works best for you and your pup. You can advantageously buy a mat to place under the bowls to protect the floor

5. Toys

Puppies love to play and need stimulating toys to keep them occupied. Choose from a selection of toys including chew toys, soft teddies, balls and activity toys. Puppies also need toys that help with itchy teeth. Find toys for your puppy here .

6. Basket or Cage

Your puppy needs a safe place to sleep and rest. Consider whether you want a basket or a cage. A crate can act as a secure base and can be especially useful when you need to get your puppy used to being home alone. A basket can also be a good choice, especially if you make sure it is filled with soft blankets and pillows that give the puppy a sense of security. You can find that here .

7. Carpet

A soft blanket, which can give your dog peace and security in a new home, is ideal for a good start with your new dog.
It is a good idea to have a soft dog blanket that you can use at home, in the dog bag, in the dog basket or for drives in the car.
With a dog blanket, your dog automatically gets a personal place to lie down, no matter where you go.

8. Nail clippers and brushes

Once the puppy has settled in, you may also need a nail clipper and brushes. Puppies grow quickly and it's a good idea to get them used to nail clipping early. Brushes and combs will help with coat care, especially for breeds with longer coats. You will find that here .

9. Care products

While you may not need grooming products like shampoo right away, it's a good idea to be prepared. Invest in dog shampoo and other care products if your puppy requires special fur care. Find care products here .

10. Insurance and Veterinarian

Remember to arrange liability insurance for your dog, which is required by law, and consider health insurance for extra security. Find a vet in advance so that you are ready to seek help if needed.

11. Transport cage, car seat and bag

If you plan to transport your puppy often, a carrier, car seat or bag can be a good investment. It will help your puppy feel safe during transport. A bag can be particularly handy as it allows you to take your puppy on all public transport for free as long as it is in the bag.
